The dark streaks on the surface area on the roof is called Gloeocaspa magma. As these infamous algae accumulate due to moisture that stays on the roof, it develops a dark-hardened outer coating which can cause your home to attract more heat. The algae can stick to multiple types of roofing material such as metal, clay tiles, slate tiles, and asphalt shingle.

The algae can affect the appearance and condition of the roof material. For shingle asphalt shingle roofs, the algae can slowly feed off on the limestone which leads to lowering the durability of the material. On clay or concrete tile roofs, the algae can on grow heavy over time due to the crevasses and curves of the tiles. The dark spots also grow on the siding surface of the property which is a combination of algae, dirt, grime, gunk, and mold. It can also occur on the windows and driveway and walkway after years of accumulating rainfall and debris that travels from the ground, onto the property surface.

The best way to handle this problem is to have a professional company use the Soft Washing application on an annual basis. We recommend the proper washing methods to all the surfaces of the property at least once a year, to maintain the cleanliness and value at its' best!
